Phillip Oppenheimer is Dean of University of the Pacific’s Thomas J. Long School of Pharmacy and Health Sciences. Dean Oppenheimer was named California Pharmacists Association Pharmacist of the Year in 2004, American College of Apothecaries Dean of the Year in 2005, and American Pharmacists Association-Academy of Student Pharmacists Most Outstanding Dean of the Year in 2014. In 2017, he was inducted into the California Pharmacists Association Hall of Fame. IRIS CEO Simon Chin has been serving with Dean Oppenheimer on the Industrial Advisory Board of the Thomas J. Long School of Pharmacy and Health Sciences for 7 years.

Nobel Laureate James P. Allison and IRIS CEO Simon Chin

On October 1, 2018, the Nobel Assembly awarded the 2018 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine jointly to James P. Allison and Tasuku Honjo for their discovery of cancer therapy by inhibition of negative immune regulation. Their seminal discoveries constitute a landmark in the fight against cancer. Dr. Alison served as professor of molecular and cell biology at UC Berkeley and director of the Cancer Research Laboratory from 1985 – 2004. He is Chair of the Department of Immunology and Executive Director of the Immunotherapy Platform at MD Anderson, currently ranked as the #1 Cancer Center in the US.

Frost and Sullivan North American Technology Innovation Award in Pharmacology

Frost and Sullivan, in recognizing IRIS Wellness Labs’ parent company, IRIS Biotechnologies, with their Award in Pharmacology, stated “For patients, this technology would be pivotal in yielding a personalized treatment regimen, with the greatest possibility of success, for each individual patient’s particular type of disease such as cancer, heart disease, diabetes, or gene-related metabolic disorders.”  IRIS Wellness Labs was launched based upon this and other technologies.

World's Largest Gathering for Laboratory Medicine at AACC

At the American Association for Clinical Chemistry conference (AACC), IRIS CEO Simon Chin was a panelist discussing the integration of data for computational and clinical outcomes.

According to AACC, this is “a panel drawn from the healthcare professionals and diagnostic industry leaders who have a vision for how this innovation evolution might look and insight into what laboratorians and IVD manufacturers may expect. Since the laboratory produces an overwhelming amount of data that challenges today’s legacy architecture, the future which will include extensive data arrays drawn from next generation sequencing and companion diagnostics, call for contemporary tools and systems to deliver the promise of tomorrow’s world.”

The panel was moderated by Bob McGonnagle, the Publisher of the College of American Pathologists trade journal, CAPToday.  Mr. McGonnagle invited Mr. Chin to speak at AACC after Mr. McGonnagle heard Mr. Chin’s invited presentation at BIO, the world’s largest biotech conference.

Mr. Chin was also an invited speaker at the Medicine in the 21st Century Conference.

Mr. Chin has four patents, including, US patent 8,693,751, “Artificial Intelligence System for Genetic Analysis.”  He has been on the University of Pacific’s Thomas J. Long School of Pharmacy and Health Sciences Industrial Advisory Board for seven years.  The board includes key people from Novartis, Gilead, Supergen, Exact Sciences, UC Berkeley, and other entities.

$3 million Breakthrough Prize Winner Dr. Jennifer Doudna and IRIS CEO Simon Chin

Dr. Jennifer Anne Doudna, a Biochemist and Professor at the University of California, Berkeley won the $3 million Breakthrough Prize for her work on a gene editing method called CRISPR (Clustered Regularly Interspaced Short Palindromic Repeats).  CRISPR/Cas genome editing techniques have many potential applications in medicine and other areas.

Dr. Thomas Robert Cech received the 1989 Nobel Prize in Chemistry with Sidney Altman, for their discovery of the catalytic properties of RNA. As president of Howard Hughes Medical Institute, he promoted science education.   Dr. Cech completed his PhD in Chemistry at the University of California, Berkeley.

IRIS CEO Simon Chin ran 26.2 miles to raise funds for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Mr. Chin believes in giving back to society. He served on the advisory board of Santa Clara University’s Ignatian Center for Jesuit Education for 11 years, on the board of directors of the YMCA of Silicon Valley, which serves a million people through its 12 branches in Santa Clara County for 6 years, and as a member of the Saratoga Rotary Club, which is part of Rotary International, for 18 years helping people all over the world.
